Because today a search engine can categorize every single page and knows what topic it is about, so backlinks from totally different websites could even be a backshot to your own website. Most of the time it is a backlink after all and gets you some traffic, but dont bet on that one.

What can i do for a good ranking on my website itself ? To round the topic thing up, you should optimize your own website to some level with some proper highlighting. Look out for sentences and words that fit your topic best and bolden them. Set your title in a fitting html tag like the heading1 (h1) tag and so on.

Dont get to happy now. Placing links, good ones, is not an easy task. What can you do helping it ? You could join link trade progams and other crazy stuff like that. But that is most of the time now solution at all, because all those pages are crowded like hell and wont help you much. Look out for frindly pages fitting your topic and ask them personally if they want to trade a link or if you could write an article and get your author box with a link in it.

If you change more than only a few links, try linking on specific subpages instead on the frontpage. Because the more outlinks you have the less every single has its strength. That means you will loose rank on your own onpage links. The internet is driven by its users. You can get a blackmark faster then you guess. Or even google and other search engines are starting to ban your website or at worst even your ip-address out of the result pages. As a side note i will tell you that if you hire a SEO (search engine optimization) specialist, be carefull and get your information striaght before you even discuss with those guys. Optimization is a task that can cause havoc if done wrong, otherwise it is worth the gold you spend on it.
